Until October 2020, regulatory bodies mandated efficacy data based on the French standard NFT 72-281. However, a significant shift occurred in 2020 with the introduction of the new European standard: BS EN 17272:2020. This standard, titled "Chemical Disinfectants and Antiseptics – Methods of airborne room disinfection by automated process," covers an extensive range of activities including bactericidal, mycobactericidal, sporicidal, fungicidal, yeasticidal, virucidal, and phagocidal activities.

Under this standard, manufacturers are obligated to test their systems to ensure compliance. This means the product and device must be evaluated together; they cannot be assessed separately according to this standard. Manufacturers must either conduct the tests themselves or arrange for their solutions to be tested to meet the requirements.
